Renewal Requirements

Certificants choosing to recertify by clinical practice and continuing education (CE) requirements are encouraged to apply online. A paper application is available for Certificants who prefer to apply by paper method.

Option 1: Recertify by CE and Clinical Practice Hours

  • Minimum 1,000 hours of clinical practice in the nurse practitioner role appropriate for the population of certification.
  • Minimum 100 hours of advanced CE applicable to the population focus.
  • 25 of the 100 CE hours must be advanced practice pharmacology credits.
  • Precepting of a NP or interdisciplinary student at the advanced health care professional level may be used at a conversion rate of up to 120 preceptor hours, not-to-exceed 25 non-pharmacology credits.
  • Hold current RN licensure during the period of certification.
  • Applicable graduate coursework is acceptable for continuing education, is subject to approval, and must be accompanied by a copy of a transcript.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) coursework is not accepted for CE credit.
  • Meet all requirements within the current 5-year period of certification.

Option 2: Recertify by Exam

  • Take the AGNP or FNP National Certification Examination. (This is not an available option for Adult NPs or Gerontology NPs).
  • Hold current RN licensure during the period of certification.
